Blog Assignment 9

In our gaming presentation we got all the points across that we needed to.  Are strongest point that we went across were the controls of the game we created.  We made a lacrosse game to add onto the Wii Sports package that you get when you buy the Wii.  We explained what each button will do with the control.  We also made it easy to learn, and make sure that everyone could play.  We also added to the controller by adding an attachment to the controller to actually feel like you were playing actual lacrosse.  This was a good idea because the Wii uses motion mainly for the controls so we had the attachment simulate the actual motion of lacrosse.  We included pictures of the controller and pointed to each button saying what it’ll do.  Are weak point that we had a little bit of trouble explaining were the Objectives.  This is because the objectives are usually the same with any other sport game that is made, which is to score more points than the opponent.  Objectives are mainly for adventure games where you have to reach checkpoints and go through many different levels and tasks.  To explain it more, we added unlockable items based on the persons skills.  If you do good, you get better gear, attributes and stadiums.  Overall, I thought our presentation and game we thought of were great

Blog Assignment 7

The video joke that I was assigned to was the T-G-I-F joke.  The joke is of someone going up to another saying T-G-I-F (thank god it’s Friday) and the other person says S-H-I-T (Sorry honey it’s Thursday).  Although the two videos we made shared the same joke, there were also differences between the two.
The first movie that we filmed was shot inside of Seigfred Hall elevator.  Our first movie that we created did a great job with explaining tension and release.  This is because of the awkward moment that the guy and girl share in the elevator.  The girl comes in the elevator saying T-G-I-F continuously and the guy becomes confused and then starts saying S-H-I-T.  The tension is the build up of the two of them having this awkward feud.  The release is when the guy says “Sorry honey, It’s Thursday”.  Along with tension and release, we had a lack of space between the two people compare to the 2nd movie that we made.  It was hard to film inside of in elavator because of the limited space an elevator holds.  We had to cram the 2 into the shot and seemed uncomfortable on camera for the actors.  At first, we were frustrated with the space, but then we realized that it added to the humor of the movie because it made the two people more awkward around each other.
The second film that we made was filmed outside of Seigfred Hall where they do the graffiti.  We made this video more creative than the first one.  We decided to do a old western silent film.  To make it old fashioned, we added a sepia effect so the color was old.  We also took out all sounds and added captions like in the old movies. The viewer would not know what they were talking about until the captions came up.  Our film did a great job demonstrating objective and subjective.  The video was subjective because it makes the audience wonder what they said or are doing when they were talking before the captions popped up.  It eventually made it objective after they talk because it shows a caption of what they just said.  The objective and subjective parts of the movie make the movie more interesting to the audience and makes them pay more attention.  This film had a lot more movement in the shots than the previous video that we made.  We had MacKenzie frolic to the guy creating a lot of movement.  They also shook their heads while they were talking to make it look more interesting.  In the end of the video, Nick throws a bottle at the two and walks over to them.
Both of the videos that we made were both good and very different from each other. Even though both were good, I liked the second video more than the first. Original From Ben Goossens

 My reframed image







I chose to reframe one of Ben Goossens pictures.  This is a picture of a room where the walls are painted to look like a sky, and the floor is painted to look like and open grass prairie.  In the original picture, there is an owl sitting on a rocking chair.  I decided to reframe just the owl, limiting the viewers of what is in the background to emphasize the bird.  I took out the emphasis that was given to the entire room and just focused on the owl in the rocking chair.  By doing this I changed the space, rule of thirds, and shot type.
The first the that drastically changed by reframing this picture is space.  I decided to limit the amount of space that the artist wanted to reveal in the original.  In the original picture, the owl was a point of interest, but did not show a major importance to the owl.  By limiting the space the owl seems more dominant, and the viewer now focuses their full attention on it making it seem like the most important part of the picture.  Limiting the space also changed the whole way somebody perceives the image.  In the original, the audience realized that the sky and grass prairie were painted on the walls of the room.  Now from limiting the viewers space, the do not know that it is a painted room, but rather a owl standing on a rocking chair in an actual grass prairie.
Along with space, I also changed the rule of thirds of the original image bye Goossens.  In the original picture, the owl was put in the right rule of third making it more visually attractive to the audience.  Now, by reframing the image, the owl is now placed in the middle third of the image giving the owl and book more importance.
By reframing the image, I also changed the shot type.  In the original shot the artist made the shot a wide shot.  The wide shot reveals vaguely the bird on the chair, but also reveals more of the background by establishing where the image is taking place.  After my reframing it changed to a medium shot.  This gives more emphasis of emotion because you are able to analyze the owl more closely, and see the facial expressions

Blog Assignment 4A

Digital media lets you connect with others that you would not have the chance to in any other form of communication.  We were unable to make these connections a few years ago, but now we have the oppurtunity. Connecting through digital media lets you touch others and influence them which is the reason why we connect.  The future is all about making connections unlike the past.  Instead of interacting with people we know, we can make connections to anyone in the world through digital media
Art
Art lets you change the way people view things.  It does not follow instructions, but lets you express your full creativity.  It is also a way to connect yourself to other people.  It is a risky form of communicating, but it also has a great reward of impacting somebody’s life and change the way that they view the world.  It gives you the ability to create something new, that others may not think of.

Blog Assignment 3

Mike Posner covered Adele’s song titled “Rolling In The Deep”.  Although there are many similarities between the 2 songs, there are also several differences.  These similarities and differences deal with the lyrics and musical qualities.
Adele originally came out with the song first, and Mike Posner covered it.  The lyrics of both songs are almost exactly identical.  Mike Posner uses Adele’s lyrics exactly in the first second and third verse of her song.  The slight difference of the songs is in the chorus.  Mike Posner changes a few of the words towards the end of the chorus.  Adele says in the chorus, “You had my heart inside your hand” while Mike Posner says, “You had my heart and soul in hand”.  Another slight change in the chorus is when Adele says, “And you played it to the beat” and Mike Posner says “But you played it to the beat” followed by adding “Bringing me out the dark”.
Along with the similarities and differences of the lyrics, there are similarities and differences between the musical qualities.  In both Adele and Mike Posner’s song the rhythms are both regular.  A slight difference is in the intensity.  Adele’s has a slightly soft intensity, while Posner’s is slightly louder.  Other similarities that both songs share in common with their music qualities are with the pitch speed and organization.  Both songs pitches are high throughout the entire song.  The pitch comes from the piano.  The piano in Adele and Posner’s song is on the higher end of the scale making the pitch high.  In Mike’s song, the synths that he adds throughout also have a higher pitch. The speeds in the songs are slow.  The piano again is played throughout the songs at a slow tempo, and the lyrics that they both sing are spread out and sung at a slow tempo as well.  The organization of both songs are ordered.  In both songs, there are three verses intermingled with three choruses, followed by an outro.  Timbre on the other hand is one music quality is different in the songs.  In Adele’s song, the timbre is simple because there is only a piano and voice for the sound.  On the other hand, Mike Posner’s song has a complex timbre.  There are many more layers of sound in his song including the piano, multiple synths, and a slow club beat.

1B Assignment

Mitch Ditkoff's article, "14 Ways To Get Breakthrough Ideas", discusses ways to think about ideas.  These ideas are useful and helpful in the creative process.  Although there are 14 ideas that he discussed, 3 of them stuck out more than the others.

1. Follow Your Fascination (1)
Ditkoff explains that if you are fascinated with an idea, then it is a good idea to pursue and look further in to.  In his reading he comes up with a great quote stating that "Fascination is nature's way of getting our attention".  Bill Gates was fascinated with producing movies as a kid.  Since he was fascinated, he pursued this and later became famous for producing movies such as E.T. and Jaws.  Bill Gates was fascinated with computers so he pursued his fascination and developed the company, Microsoft.  If a person is not fascinated with an idea but still pursues it, he/she might not succeed with the idea.  This is because the person is not interested, so they will not put much of an effort in it.  For example, if somebody does not want to attend college and enhance their education further, but still attends and pursues the idea of going to college, the person may not put forth much effort and end up failing.  If somebody does want to attend college to enhance their education in order to receive a better paying job, then that person will work hard and succeed in obtaining a degree and well paying job.  I myself am fascinated about video production, and love to edit videos.  Since I am so fascinated, I am more likely to pursue what I want to do in the future, which is to become a movie editor.

2. Fantasize (5)
Ditkoff explains that fantasizing about something will help you discover more ideas and to successfully reach these ideas.  Many people are told to not fantasize because it will get your hopes up, and potentially lose creativeness.  But it is actually the opposite.  If you fantasize about the impossible, you are more likely to achieve the impossible.  For example, before a baseball game a pitcher could fantasize about the game that he is about to pitch in.  He can fantasize about each pitch that he is going to throw for each player.  If he fantasizes, he will become more creative with ideas of what to actually throw in the game.  He then has a no hitter, just because he imagined what he was going to do.  So if I was going to try this technique out, I would be fantasizing about my dream career as a movie editor in Hollywood.  I imagine the process that I have to go through in order to reach my goal as a big time movie editor.  Since I fantasized about the process and the obstacles that I need to overcome in order to reach this goal, I will become more prepared and have more motivation to achieve everything I can in order to reach my fantasy as a Hollywood movie editor.

3. Brainstorm (11)
Ditkoff explains that brainstorming is key to success.  You need to think of ways to achieve your goals.  He also explains that sometimes, you need a partner or somebody to help you in order to achieve an idea.  You need to think of as many ways to reach success.  You need to think of a meaningful question, find the right people to help you and pursue your question.  For example, Bill Gates partnered with Paul Allen in order to achieve his idea of Microsoft.  Bill Gates thought of an idea, found the right people to associate with (Paul Allen), and think of ways to pursue your question (development of Microsoft).  Collaborative thinking is sometimes necessary in order to obtain ideas.  The saying, "Two heads are better than one" is perfect with this idea.  With multiple people thinking about ideas and brainstorming, there is more likely going to be more ideas to choose from that somebody who was thinking all to themselves.  Others ideas help spark new ideas that you might not have been able to think of on your own.  For example, without the Winklevoss' idea of Harvard Connection, Mark Zuckerberg would have not been able to branch off and come up with the idea of Facebook.




What is the topic of your next group brainstorm? Who will you invite? Who will facilitate? When?


My next topic for group brainstorming is how will I be able to make myself noticeable to big name movie companies in Hollywood?  I would invite people that I share the common goal that I have.  Possibly find people to create a group to develop videos with.  For example, since I want to be an editor, I should associate with writers, producers, videographers, and grips.  That way I can do what I love to do, while still achieving the other peoples goals as well and be able to make great videos.  I will facilitate with AVW who has groups of people making shows for Ohio University.  This will be done as soon as possible (this spring)



Blog assignment 1A

My name is Brian Recker and I am a visual creative learner.  This means that I tend to create and learn information based off of visual examples.  I am majoring in video production at Scripps Media Arts and Studies, and enjoy creating videos.  My specific creativity in video production is the editing aspect of it.  I enjoy creating the timeline for videos and putting shots in sequence to make a well edited video.  Chris Hedrick, who develops wedding videos and local documentaries, is someone I look up to significantly.  I had the opportunity to intern him and his company while in high school.  He taught me all there is to know about the process of creating videos.  He specializes in editing, and has won multiple Emmy's for his videography.  I look up to him, and consider him one of my mentors.  Here is an example of the work that he creates.  I had the opportunity to go on video shoots with him.  This is where I obtained creative ideas about how to choose certain shots to film, and how professionals interact with their customer.  Chris uses tension and release in his wedding videos through music.  In the link that I posted earlier, Chris adds a song that is familiar, but uses a climatic part of the song where it adds intensity through the repetition of the certain part, then the song calms back down making the wedding video go back to its familiar flow.  Along with the videography I was able to shadow and assist him in editing the videos afterwards, where he taught me shortcuts and creative was to edit and add special effects to the videos.  This helps attract audiences, and make the final video more appealing and professional.  A group that has influenced my creativity also is an amateur youtube group called, Balloon Shop.  They make funny videos that are also done in a professional way.  They attract a large audiences and come up with creative skits that are enjoying to watch.  The people in the group frequently uses text/subtext in their short skits.  For example, in one of their YouTube videos titles, Halo 3: I am the Masterchief.  They use the text of him playing the video game Halo 3 as the main character, Masterchief.  The subtext that they also imply is that he actually is the Masterchief in real life, and his friend physically treats him as the actual character through a double-entendre.  They take familiar thinAlong with Chris Hedrick and Balloon Shop, Lee Smith is an artist that has influence my creative process.  Lee Smith is a professional film editor, and has done major films such as, The Dark Knight and Inception.  These films have been so successful because of the editing that Lee Smith did.  He uses Active and Didactic themes.  He uses editing to tell the audience what to think in the movie Inception.  He makes the audience think about what inception is and about dreams, but he also uses active themes so the audience has to think for themselves about whether or not they are trapped in their own dreams.  These three artists and groups have influenced my creative process significantly visually.  The have helped shape the way that I think.
